MOMOKO KAMIYA holds the honour of being the first successful marimba soloist to entered the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. The following year she entered The Juilliard School in New York completing the Bachelor of Music course in three years, during which she received many scholarships and awards including the Soul Goodman, Morris Goldenberg, Naumberg and Juilliard Association Awards. Kamiya's professional career began with a recital at Suntory Hall in Tokyo in 1990, continuing with numerous performances and gaining international recognition when she won first prize in the Luxembourg International Marimba Competition in 1995. Kamiya's recent activities are multifaceted. Besides her many recitals, concerts and recordings, she has also made numerous concerto performances with the major Japanese orchestras - the Yomiuri Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, New Japan Philharmonic, Nagoya Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Radio Luxembourg Symphony Orchestra and Beijing Symphony Orchestra abroad. She was selected as one of The Top Young Artists Today ' by the TOYOTA foundation who sponsored her recital in Kioi Hall, Tokyo in 2001 Kamiya was the popular host of the NHK Radio 'Music and Talk' program thorough out 2000. Recording on the PHILLIPS label, she has released five recordings - Marimba Cocktail, which won 'Best Recording Prize' (1996), Arabesque (1997), Marimba Japanesque (1998), Asian Scene (1999), and most recently Marimba Virtuoso (2002). She has also recorded performances of solo works by Toshi Ichiyanagi and Tokuhide Niimi for inclusion on various CDs.
Since 2000 Kamiya has extended her career abroad having been invited to perform in music festivals and concerts in Poland, Belgium, Mexico, China, Austria, and U.S.A. She has also been a jury member at The First Polish National Marimba Competition, the First, and the Second Belgium International Marimba Competition, Chiapas Marimba Competition, and Concours International de Marimba pour Etudiants in Paris. In 2004, she had her PASIC debut at Nashville, U.S.A on its evening concert. Engagements for 2005 include teaching, and concerts, in Holland, Belgium, and Poland as well as attending as a jury at International Percussion Competition Luxembourg.
Kamiya has been a faculty member of Senzoku Gakuen College of Music, Okinawa Prefectural University of Art, Aich Prefectural University of Art, and Heisei University of Music.
